best windows phone apps

these are The BEST Windows Phone Apps For 2015

Navigate your way around the always-declining App Gap with these awesome applications and games, which we'll be updating regularly

Windows Phone is generating a lot of excitement nowadays. It could the catalyst Microsoft needs to position itself as a true contender against Android and iOS.
The thing that hurts the platform most, however, is lack of apps – or, “app gap” as it is more commonly known. But the good news is this situation is changing, and rather quickly, too, with more and more quality Windows Phone apps and games coming weekly. Which are the must-haves for your Windows Phone? Here are the picks we’re choosing each week.

Lara Croft GO (£3.89)

A few years ago game maker Square Enix MontrĂ©al decided to take a unique angle on the development of the Hitman franchise. They turned what was a first person shooter and stealth console game into an amazing turn-based puzzler. The game was one of the biggest hits on iOS that year. Now Square Enix has followed Hitman GO up with Lara Croft GO–and I’m happy to say they’ve released it on Windows Phone too. In the game you play the Tomb Raider as she explores lost and forgotten worlds in an addictive turn-based puzzler.

Star Chart (£0.79)

Star Chart is a great app for those fascinated by the cosmos. At its heart its an augmented reality app. You open the app and then point your Windows Phone’s camera to the sky and Star Chart will display the names of all the stars and planets you're looking at. The best thing is it works by using your GPS and your Windows Phone’s gyroscope, so you can pan around the sky and the labels that appear on your screen will update in real time.

Create A Perfect Selfie (£1.49)

Calling all vain people. Want to look as good in your selfies as this guy looks in his? Then download the Create A Perfect Selfie app. It’s essentially an easy image editor for faces. Snap a picture of yourself and then use the apps tools to instantly whiten your teeth, remove pimples, smooth wrinkles, and more.

FictionBookReader (£2.29)

Fiction Book Reader is probably the best ebook reader I’ve found on Windows Phone. It’s got a beautiful layout that lets you search your library via author, title, date, genre, series, and categories. It’s also got powerful text search and allows you to create bookmarks and notes in the ebooks you read.

Function Plotter (free)

Function Plotter was shown to me by a friend who is a self-described “maths geek”. The app lets you plot functions and then see them drawn out in curved sketches. It’s a beautifully made app that not only handles normal functions, but supports functions with complex numbers, functions in a three-dimensional space, functions in a four-dimensional space, functions in parametric equation, functions in a polar coordinate system, functions in a spherical coordinate system and functions in a cylindrical coordinate system. If you understand what those are you are a better man than I.

Tango Master - Japanese (free)

Japanese culture is becoming more popular in the west than ever before. Five years ago no one here knew what manga was, now you see people reading it on the tube. That interest in all things Japanese is sure to only increase with the run up to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. If you want to give learning the language a try, Tango Master is a great app. My favorite thing about it is how it shows you the order the strokes of Kanji (Japanese words) are written in.

Manga Blaze (free)

If you’re a fan of comic books–and manga specifically–you need to check out Manga Blaze. It’s a comic book reader for your Windows Phone that gives you access to manga from over 17 sources. The app keeps track of what you read and what page you’re on so you’re ready to pick up where you left off as soon as you open it. It also features offline viewing so you can read even when you don’t have an Internet connection.

Mirror Cam (free)

Mirror Cam is a creative camera app that allows you to create mirrored images with just a few taps. This gives the impression that the subject of your shots are reflected in a poll of water–or it just allows you to creates surreal snaps too. There’s also a host of additional filters you can apply.

Flightradar24 (£2.29)

Flightradar24 is an app that has been around on Android and iOS for a while–and now it finally comes to Windows Phone. With it you can track flights in real time and see exactly where they are on a map. It’s also got an amazing Augmented Reality View that identifies the planes flying overhead by simply pointing your phone’s camera to the sky.

Art Guide (free)

This week we’ve got two great apps for those of you thinking of taking a staycation in the future. The first is Art Guide, a comprehensive guide to more than 700 art museums and galleries in the UK. Using this app you can check out what exhibitions are showing where, find full menu info, create wish lists for exhibitions you want to see, and even get up to 50% off major exhibitions.

National Trust (free)

The second “staycation” app we have for you is the official National Trust app. This app is a guide to more than 550 places protected by the National Trust throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland. You can use it to discover what’s right around you, get travel directions to and from National Trust sites, see what special events are going on when, and save your favorite places. Another plus is its offline mode, so if you’re hiking through a National Trust wilderness you’ll still be able to read all about it even if you don’t have a signal.

Slack (free)

Slack is the communication tool that has taken the business world by storm. It’s an instant messaging platform that allows teams to keep in communication, share ideas, and generally get things done much quicker than my communicating through standard email. Right now Slack for Windows Phone is in beta, but for those that can’t wait for the final version, it’s worth checking out this app now.

Dailymotion (free)

Dailymotion is one of the great YouTube video alternatives. The site features both user uploaded and professional videos from media outlets. It’s known for its curated content and excellent discoverability. Thankfully, it’s also now known as one of the major video sites that actually has bothered making a Windows Phone app.

10Calc (free)

Most calculator apps don’t do it all. 10Calc does. What do I mean by that? Well, many calculator apps just handle equations. 10Calc does all that, but it also has built in unit converter algorithms so you can use one app for all your calculation needs. A nice plus is the theme customization and the ability to convert over 100 units of measurement.

6tag (free)

Instagram’s Windows Phone app leaves a lot to be desired. Thankfully there’s 6tag–a third-party Instagram app that features many of the more advanced commands Instagram apps on iOS and Android have. Two really nice features of 6tag include the ability to create custom locations and–the biggie–manage multiple Instagram accounts from the same app.

Vine (free)

Vine is one of the few big social media platforms that have a good Windows Phone app. With the app users can create six second videos–or “Vines”–to share with their friends and followers. You can also follow other users to catch glimpses into their lives. My favorite part of the app is the trending section–it’s a great way to discover new and interesting vids.

My Piano Phone (free)

This app came to my attention through a friend, who is a professional musician. Whenever he’s out and get the idea for a new tune, he’ll open My Piano Phone and test it out on the realistic sounding keys. The app also offers a complete drum kit for those who like their beats. It’s a fun little free app that also happens to have over 11,000 five star reviews across all stores.

Storage Cleaner Pro (free)

If you’re a PC user you’ll know Windows begins leaving space hogging cache files all over your hard drive. Given a long enough time these files can take up a large chunk of your precious GBs. The same thing happens with invisible cache files on your Windows Phone. That’s where this app comes in. With one click the app will clean all the cache files from your Windows Phone, allowing you to reclaim storage.

Caledos Runner (free)

There’s not many good running trackers for Windows Phone, which is why we really love Caledos Runner. The app has a beautiful design that doesn’t complicate its number of tracking features. With Caledos you can track your route on a map, track your calories burned, and track other elements like time, pace, speed, position, heart rate, and climb. The app also works with RunKeeper, so you can share your progress with your friends there. A nice feature are the big, easy-to-read stats, so you can quickly pinpoint the one you’re looking for even when running down a bumpy path.

Make it Rain: The Love of Money (free)

Make it Rain is one of those fun, addictive time waster games. It’s gameplay can best be likened to the way you interact with Tinder. Swipe on a pile of cash to accumulate as much as you can in a given time period. The more you accumulate the more you have to “invest” in both legit and shady business dealings. A nice touch with the game is that you can switch between currencies, so if US dollar aren’t your thing you can change to the Argentine Peso.

Briefcase (free)

Briefcase is a well thought out file manager for Windows Phone. It act as both a file organizer and a locker for all your local files, memory card and OneDrive files. You can arrange your files into specific folders and even pin those folders to your Start screen. Briefcase also supports in-app viewers, so you can browse through your pics or even play music and video right in the app. Best of all, it provides a passcode lock feature so you can keep your files safe.

Threes! (free)

Threes! is the addictive numbers puzzler that has taken the mobile world by storm. In it you mesh numbers together to match them. Once matched, those numbers double. Your goal is to match as many numbers on the board before it fills up. The game has traditionally cost money but now the publisher has released this free ad supported version. Give it a download and I can guarantee you you’ll realize you’ve never played a better time waster. And the little voices the number blocks talk in are just a huge bonus (you’ll see what I mean).

Opera Mini (free)

Opera Mini is one of the most respected browsers in the world, known for its speed and security. Those features translate well in this Windows Phone version. With Opera Mini you can actually save data while browsing because it compresses web data as it passes from server, through network, and to your phone. The app also offers some cool features like “Speed Dial” which is a collection of buttons representing your most visited sites. And like any good browser Opera Mini offers support for tabs and also has an impressive download manager for a mobile browser.

GoPro (free)

If you’re a GoPro user you need to download the official GoPro app for Windows Phone. With it you can completely control your wireless GoPro camera. You can start and stop recordings, adjust settings, and take a photo all from within the app. The app also has powerful share features, so you can send that cool video of your skydiving adventure out to all your social media channels instantly.

Plague Inc. (£0.99)

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if there were a large-scale plague outbreak, wonder no more. The hit game Plague Inc comes to Windows Phone in this excellent port. In it you play an evil scientist/terrorist who has created a plague. Your goal is no less than the complete eradication of mankind. The game is a mix of simulation and strategy and has been hailed for its accuracy–so much so the US Centers for Disease control actually invited the developer to speak at the CDC about disease modeling!

Crossy Road (free)

Another iOS and Android hit comes to Windows Phone. Crossy Road is obviously an unabashed ripoff of 80s arcade classic Frogger, but it’s an immensely fun game nonetheless. The retro style of the game will appeal to those nostalgic ones out there as you play various characters trying to hop your way across roads, rivers and train tracks without being hit.
